Armed Carjacking Pursuit Ends In Fiery Cerritos Crash; Cops

Sheriff's deputies were chasing a vehicle that had been carjacked by a person armed with a long rifle, authorities said.

CERRITOS, CA — Two people are in custody after a police pursuit and fiery crash early Monday, according to authorities.

The incident began shortly before 7 a.m., when Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies spotted in Hawaiian Gardens a vehicle that had been carjacked Friday by a person armed with a long rifle, police said. A short chase followed and when police caught up with the vehicle, it had struck a pole at 195th Street and Pioneer Boulevard in Cerritos and was on fire, resulting in a total loss, according to authorities.

The suspects fled the scene of the crash but were apprehended quickly and charged with vehicle theft, police said, adding the carjacking is under investigation.
