📰 News we're reading

• Salem Street bridge replacement nears finishing touches (chicoer.com) — A long-awaited replacement for Chico’s Salem Street bridge over Little Chico Creek is nearly finished, with completion expected within about a week and new ADA-compliant sidewalks, bike lanes, and safer traffic lanes. The project updates a 1916-era span that’s long been considered too narrow and hazardous, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, and restores a key link between the Barber neighborhood and downtown.

• City explains process for tiny homes on church parking lots (chicosol.org) — Chico’s Community Development Director is clarifying how tiny-home villages on church parking lots would actually move forward, stressing that the City Council only backed the idea in concept. He outlines required neighborhood meetings, an Administrative Use Permit with public hearings, and compliance with state building and fire codes before any project can open.

• State's olive oil production still has room for growth (dailydemocrat.com) — A California olive-tree nursery near Chico is seeing steady grower interest in olives for oil, as producers look for drought-tolerant, lower-labor crops. The piece explains how super high-density orchards, organic practices, and rising consumer demand are shaping a still-young statewide industry, while growers weigh long-term orchard viability and tight profit margins.
