70-year-old Motorcyclist Killed In Walnut Creek I-680 Crash Is Identified

WALNUT CREEK - A motorcyclist who died Tuesday after colliding with a sedan careening out of control on Interstate Highway 680 in Walnut Creek was identified Thursday by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as Richard Petrillo.

The 70-year-old Martinez man was ejected from his motorcycle during a crash initially reported along Highway 680 south of the North Main Street off-ramp at 12:41 p.m. Tuesday, according to the CHP.

A sedan was making a turning movement on the highway's northbound lanes when it struck the center divider and was swung around into oncoming traffic, according to the CHP.

Petrillo could not avoid the sedan and his motorcycle collided with it, throwing him onto the highway's southbound lanes.

Medical personnel provided aid to him and he was taken to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, but was later pronounced dead, according to the CHP.

A man in a vehicle on the highway's southbound side was also extricated at the scene and taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, fire officials said.

Debris from the crash temporarily blocked lanes on both sides of the highway and caused major delays.

CHP officials were not immediately available Thursday to provide an update on the investigation into the crash.
