Calpine Energy Center Fire Knocked Down

An automatic fire extinguisher system was activated when the fire began, and everyone near the generator got out safely, authorities say.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA -- Firefighters extinguished a fire that started this afternoon in a steam turbine generator at an energy plant in Pittsburg, a fire captain with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said.

The fire was extinguished at 5:50 p.m. about two hours after it started at the Calpine Delta Energy Center at 1200 Arcy Lane.

An automatic fire extinguisher system was activated when the fire began and everyone near the generator got out safely, Fire Prevention Capt. Lisa Martinez said.

No firefighters were injured.

Martinez said that since the situation involved hydrogen, which is a hazardous material, a hazmat team was brought in. But since the plant is an industrial one, it wasn't necessary to evacuate any residences or businesses.

The majority of the fire had been extinguished as of 4:45 p.m.

Officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were notified because the energy plant is near the Dow Wetlands Preserve and the San Joaquin River, Martinez said.
