Clayton Police Chief Escapes From Alcatraz

Police Chief Dan Lawrence traded his police uniform for a wetsuit and jumped off Alcatraz and swam to San Francisco on Saturday morning.

Lawrence was one of 786 who participated in the 19th Annual Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim. Conditions weren't ideal, with a strong current and the water 61 degrees, but the chief, who has completed the swim before, finished in the middle of the pack, reaching the mainland in 61 minutes.

"This year’s swim seemed more difficult," he said. "But I made it without much problem, though I did have a slower time than previous swims."
