'No Ordinary Dog': Concord's K-9 Rita Retires

CONCORD, CA β€” Concord Police Department K-9 Rita retired earlier this year after nearly five years with the agency.

The German Shepherd Dog was imported from the Czech Republic and began her career with the department in May 2020, according to the agency.

β€œFrom the moment she was partnered with K9 Corporal Paul VanDiver, it was clear she was no ordinary dog,” the department said in a Facebook post.

β€œAfter excelling in her basic K9 training, Rita hit the streets with relentless energy and sharp instincts. It wasn’t long before she was cross-trained to detect the scent of firearms and ammunition.

β€œRita’s nose was nothing short of legendary. Her keen detection skills played a pivotal role in solving numerous investigations, leading to arrests that might not have been possible without her.”
