"Cop's Cop" Dies While Working As Security Guard

Pittsburg police officer Donald "DP" Pearman was working at Macy's when he saw a female shoplifter who had to be physically detained.

PITTSBURG - A Pittsburg police officer was moonlighting as a mall security officer when he died suddenly on Monday, according to a statement released by the California Highway Patrol.

Pittsburg police Detective Charles Blazer described Donald “DP” Pearman in a statement as a “cop‘s cop.” When he wasn’t working for the city, he often worked as a loss prevention officer at J.C. Penny and later, at Macy’s, according to Blazer.

“DP truly did the job for the love of it, as money meant little to him,” Blazer said in the statement.

Pearman was working at Macy’s when he saw a female shoplifter who had to be physically detained, according to Blazer. Pearman was only involved in handcuffing her, Blazer said.

After she was detained, he left to use the bathroom, where Concord police later found him. Concord police attempted to revive Pearman, but he was unresponsive, Blazer said.
