Death Of Man At Homeless Shelter In Concord Investigated

Officers initially responded to 911 calls from the shelter about a man acting erratically, police said.

CONCORD, CA —A transient who died after being detained by police last week at the Concord Homeless Shelter has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office. Steven Hankins, 50, was yelling and being violent when police were called at 4 p.m. Friday to the shelter at 2047 Arnold Industrial Way, authorities said.

As he was being detained, police said Hankins was still behaving erratically and eventually showed signs of medical distress.

Paramedics arrived but Hankins was declared dead at the scene.

A cause of death has not been released. Concord police, the county district attorney's office and the sheriff's office are investigating the case.
