A stretch of BART tracks in Contra Costa County will be closed from noon to 3:30 p.m. today as the National Transportation Safety Board investigates the BART accident that killed two workers over the weekend. The tracks will be closed between the Lafayette and Pleasant Hill stations to allow NTSB investigators to conduct a re-enactment of the accident, which occurred at about 2 p.m. Saturday about a mile north of the Walnut Creek station.
BART officials have set up a bus bridge that will take riders between the Lafayette, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek stations during the closure. The buses will run every 15 minutes. The re-enactment will help the NTSB learn more about why engineers Laurence Daniels, 66, and Christopher Sheppard, 58, were struck by a train while investigating a report of a dip in the trackway. The train that hit the pair had no passengers on board and the person at the controls was an operator in training, according to the NTSB. The accident occurred during the BART strike, which began Friday and ended Monday night.
