CONCORD, CA β€” A gravel truck driver was cited Saturday afternoon after the double-trailer hopper truck he was driving was seen losing its load - an estimated six tons of gravel - on the highway, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.

The truck, which CHP Officer Brandon Correia said had been loaded somewhere in east Contra Costa County, was headed south on State Highway 242 at about 1 p.m. Saturday when a CHP officer saw the truck losing its load, mostly along the 3.4 miles of Highway 242.

The truck was stopped near where 242 merges into Interstate Highway 680 near the Concord-Pleasant Hill border.

It's unusual for a driver to be cited for such an offense, Correia said, "but our officer was able to see it happening, and he pulled the truck over," Correia said. The citation was for failing to properly secure the gravel load.

The truck was weighed shortly after the citation was issued, and weighed six tons less than it weighed when it was loaded, Correia said.
