Arrest Made in Atlanta Shooting Death of Culver City Native

Joseph Gibbs, 23, was shot and killed on June 13. His funeral will take place on Saturday in Culver City.

U.S. Marshalls have arrested 20-year-old Nicolas Ross Smith in Stockbridge, GA, in connection with the shooting of Morehouse College student, and Culver City native Joseph Gibbs, reports the Atlanta Daily World.

Gibbs, who would have turned 24 today, and who was studying for a graduate English degree, was shot multiple times behind the wheel of his car, according to Atlanta Police.

Smith has been charged with homicide and aggravated assault and authorities say they are looking for a second suspect.

“At this time, the shooting appears to be related to a possible drug transaction between the suspect and victim,” said Officer John Chaffee.

Speaking with local media in Atlanta, one of Gibbs’ former Culver City childhood classmates said “It’s just shocking, it doesn’t add up.”

Gibbs’ funeral will take place on Saturday Angelus Funeral Home in Los Angeles at 10 a.m. He will then be buried at Holy Cross cemetery in Culver City.
