Culver City Council and School Board Liaison Committee Meeting Wrap Up
The following highlights were provided by Vice Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells following the July 1 meeting at CCUSD headquarters.

The following information is from the City of Culver City/CCUSD Liaison Committee Meeting that took place July 1, attended by Vice Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells. These are her takeaway highlights.
City Composting Program
The City will commence a composting program by the end of the year in all probability. Restaurants and Culver City schools will be able to compost food waste rather than letting it rot in the landfills. The finished compost will be returned to the City to distribute to residents. This move will also coincide with the end of polystyrene (Styrofoam) trays in our schools, which take many thousands of years to break down, and have been linked to cancer in health studies.

School Parking Issues
There was a discussion about parking around schools, and the need to strike a balance between resident parking needs and those of the school community. The City will continue to expand its program to adjust street sweeping schedules so they do not conflict with school drop-off and pick-up times. In addition, the committee plans to meet with the Culver City Police Department to coordinate plans to increase safety, enforcement, and education for drivers around our schools.

CCUSD Services for Children in Need
Superintendent La Rose gave an impressive report about Culver City Unified School District services for children in need, including free lunches and activities every weekday of the summer, and a student-run program to donate clothing. Ideas for additional partnerships with local groups were shared to address homelessness in the district.
Construction Costs
There were promising ideas for reducing construction costs by having the District and City work together on projects. We may be seeing shared initiatives to increase energy efficiency, and others in the future.
