Culver City's 8th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Saturday

Join the City of Culver City and local organizations this Sat. Jan. 19 to celebrate “Realizing the Dream, Living the Legacy,” honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

The event is free to the public and will take place from noon to 6 p.m. at the Culver City Senior Center, 4095 Overland Ave.

11:30 a.m. Doors Open

12 – 12:25 p.m. West Los Angeles College Jazz Ensemble

12:25 – 12:35 p.m. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” (Agape Youth Choir) and Star Spangled Banner (Chikk)

12:35 – 12:40 p.m. Welcome from Rupert Francisco, chair, Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee

12:40 – 12:45 p.m. Comments from Culver City Mayor Andy Weissman

12:45 – 12:50 p.m. Acknowledgments

12:50 – 1 p.m. Actor Gerald Rivers as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

1 – 2 p.m. Keynote speech, Rev. James Lawson, friend and ally of Dr. King

2 – 2:10 p.m. Comments by Dr. Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh, President of West LA College

2:10 – 2:45 p.m. Winners, Culver City Martin Luther King Student Speech contest 

2:45  - 3 p.m. Introduction of film, Dr. Darnell Hunt, UCLA professor and scholar

3 – 3:50 p.m. Screening of "MLK: The Assassination Tapes"

3:50 – 4:35 p.m. Panel discussion with Ellen Broms, Robert Farrell, and Dr. Robert Singleton with moderator Larry Earl Jr., Executive Director of the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum  

4:35 – 5:10 p.m. Q&A with panelists

5:10 – 5:20 p.m. Actor Gerald Rivers as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

5:20 – 5:30 p.m. Closing remarks, Rupert Francisco, chair, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration 

5:30 p.m. Birthday cake served in honor of Dr. King's birthday
