Extended Metered Parking in Downtown Culver City Suspended Until July 10

The City Council unanimously adopted a resolution directing the Chief of Police to suspend the operation of 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. metered parking and all day parking on Sundays.

Downtown Culver City drivers have been granted a reprieve from extended parking meter hours until July 10.

At Monday night’s City Council meeting, the council unanimously agreed to direct the Chief of Police Don Pederson to suspend the 6 – 11 p.m. metered parking and the all day Sunday metered parking.

The increased hours were approved by the City Council on Jan. 23, based on the Walker Parking Study. However, following public comments at the March 26 council meeting about the potential negative impacts of the extended hours to Downtown businesses, metered parking will now revert back to 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and there will be no metered parking on Sundays.

According to a City staff report, this grace period through July 10 is designed “to allow sufficient time for staff to gather additional information on the potential impacts of extended hours of operation of the parking meters in Downtown and related options to address concerns voiced by the Downtown businesses.”

From a financial standpoint, staff estimated that the additional revenue generated by the extended enforcement hours would have been $297,593. Suspending the enforcement for 90 days will decrease anticipated revenue by approximately 25 percent or $75,000.
