Recap: Culver City Democrats Talk Pot

After a lively discussion about Proposition 19, which would legalize marijuana in California, the Culver City Democratic Club voted unanimously to endorse the campaign.

One of the hottest propositions on the November ballot is number 19: the legalization of marijuana in California. If passed, Proposition 19 would decriminalize personal use of cannabis and allow state authorities to regulate its commercial sale.

Culver City resident and attorney Hanna Dershowitz is an adamant supporter of the campaign, and visited the Culver City Democratic Club Wednesday evening to encourage the endorsement of Proposition 19. Among her arguments, Dershowitz cited the $1.4 billion of revenue estimated to roll into California when pot is rendered a commercial product. Members and guests debated the proposed tax amount of $50 per ounce, as well as the idea that legalizing marijuana would lead to fewer incarcerations for possession.

At the end of the discussion, the Culver City Democratic Club voted unanimously to endorse Proposition 19.

"Let's try this," said member Lee Welinsky. "Then maybe we'll have more money so that we can take care of our school kids and not just fill up the jails with people that smoke marijuana."
