Danville Breaks Ground On New Diablo Road Trail Section
Leaders gathered to initiate construction of the final 0.9-mile of the 2.1-mile pedestrian trail along Diablo Road.

DANVILLE, CA — Local officials gathered to break ground on the construction of the last leg of the Diablo Road Trail Project, a project to create a 2.1-mile multi-use trail for pedestrians and cyclists over 36 years in the making.
Leaders gathered to celebrate the beginning of construction on a 0.9-mile paved multi-use trail located along the south side of Diablo Road from Fairway Drive to roughly 400 feet west of Avenida Nueva. The trail section will connect the existing 0.5-mile Diablo Road Trail to the new 0.7-mile trail built as part of the Magee Preserve development.
Plans for the trail were originally outlined in the town's 1989 Townwide Trails Master Plan, and incorporated into the Town of Danville 2030 General Plan, 2021 Town-wide Bicycle Master Plan, 2017 Parks, Arts and Recreation Strategic Plan. When completed, the trail will improve connections between Green Valley and Blackhawk roads and expand access to Mount Diablo State Park, according to a town news release.

The project budget is $5.2 million, $4.7 million of which is provided through the Contra Costa Transportation Authority Measure J Transportation Sales Tax fund.
Project work in 2025 will focus on removing old fencing and installing construction fencing, which is not expected to impact traffic on Diablo Road. The work will continue through December 2026, with work paused from November to March to avoid the rainy season. Message boards will be posted 72 hours in advance to notify the public of scheduled work.

“Over 36 years ago, we were standing here, envisioning this trail,” Danville Mayor Renee Morgan said at the groundbreaking event. “Over the years, local leaders, residents, and partner organizations have worked together to turn that early idea into today’s reality. This trail represents connection, access, and preservation – values that define the Danville community and our county.”
