Fencer, Volunteer, Barn Builder: Danville Star Student Athlete
We all know athletes who shine whether they're competing or not. Let's help share these amazing stories!

DANVILLE, CA — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.
This submission comes from Paul Logue who nominated his son Ethan Logue of Danville, who is a nationally-ranked fencer and regular volunteer at the Contra Costa Food Bank. During the pandemic, Ethan worked with his coach to build a fencing studio in a barn that his team could use for practice. The team still practices there to this day.

5. Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?
Ethan is a senior at Monte Vista High School in Danville, and has been fencing since the age of 11. Ethan competes at the national level with USA Fencing and is currently ranked in the top 100 fencers in the nation (and #13 in California) for his age division. Also, Ethan was recently named to USA Fencing's High School "All American First Team" for the third consecutive year. In Ethan's most recent national competition, the USA Fencing Summer Nationals in Minneapolis, Ethan finished 24th in a field of the top 340 fencers from across the country.
Aside from fencing, Ethan is very involved in his community and giving back. Ethan can often be found at the Contra Costa County Food Bank where he has contributed well over 200 hours of volunteer time toward the preparation and distribution of food to families all across Contra Costa County.
6. What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?
Overcoming obstacles. During covid, it became difficult if not impossible for many to train in their sport. Ethan, with the help of his coach, set up a homemade fencing studio in a barn and used that for team training. "Barn fencing" was such a hit with the team that it remains open and active even to this day.
Keep up the great work, Ethan!
