Man Killed On 680 In Alamo After Tire Comes Off Nearby Van: Reports
Authorities have identified the 61-year-old man killed on I-680 after a rogue tire crossed the freeway and hit his windshield.
ALAMO, CA — Authorities have identified the man who was killed on southbound I-680 near Stone Valley Road Thursday when a detached tire from a nearby car crashed into his truck. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office identified the victim to several outlets as Fernando Ruiz, 61, of San Jose.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the rear wheel of a blue Ford van traveling north on 680 crossed the freeway and center divide, and hit Ruiz’s windshield at around 1:35 p.m. He was the only occupant of the truck.
It’s currently unknown why the tire came off the van. The van driver and his passenger were not injured, according to reports. CHP said that the driver is cooperating with the investigation, and drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, according to NBC Bay Area.
