Can 2025's stock market be called "the most resilient of all time"? While it may be too soon to tell, it’s certainly among the fastest and most robust rebounds seen in recent decades — an excellent demonstration of resilience amid compounding uncertainty. This year's wild market swings and convincing recovery could be just the type of stock market action that gave birth to the Wall Street saying, "The market climbs the wall of worry."

Historical recoveries such as those after the 2007-2009 "Global Financial Crisis" crash or the rapid response during the 2020 "Covid Crash" involved larger drops and equally swift or even faster recoveries in percentage terms. The GOAT market comebacks or not, for perspective sake the first half of 2025 has been a super sign of strength and resiliency as is formed a bullish "V-shape" rebound.

The stock market rebound seen in 2025 stands out as one of the most remarkable and rapid in recent history. After a late February peak, the SP 500 fell nearly 8% up to "Liberation Day Eve" on April 2. It then cratered nearly 15% more to the intra-day low on April 7. We were in a bear market, and fast! Then the rapid reversal. The SP 500 soared almost 10% on April 9 alone, its third best one day advance in history. Since the April low, the market has more than regained all it lost in the short lived bear market and nearing a new all-time new high yesterday. The chart in the image above depicts the "V-Shaped" market pattern formed by the Nasdaq so far this year. Its bear market drop and quick rise to new highs was greater the the SP 500 in percentage terms. It's may be helpful to note that after the Nasdaq 26% from this year's high to low, it had to gain 35% just to break even. Numbers!

While the 2025 rebound is undeniably impressive, it joins a distinguished list of extraordinary recoveries, as noted above. Remember stomach turning market moves?:

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, markets recovered from crash lows within just a few months, marking one of the sharpest rebounds ever.
  • The "Great Financial Crisis" was one the worst in my experience. Maybe because it was steeper and more prolonged than bear markets since. The post-2008 crash recovery took several years, but eventually led to a spectacular long-term rally.
  • The 1987 Black Monday crash was followed by a swift turnaround, with markets reaching new highs within two years. For me, in a word, October 19, 1987 was surreal.

Here's a quote from successful stock investor, Shelby M.C. Davis, "History provides crucial insight regarding market crises: they are inevitable, painful, and ultimately surmountable."

Words from Rocky Balboa tell us, "It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

So far 2025 has been a Rocky Balboa stock market.
