Town Council Candidates.
Danville voters are choosing between three candidates for four at-large seats on the Town Council. The race largely deals with questions of how to deal with rising crime, particularly a series of recent home burglaries; and how to maintain Danville's small-town charm, small businesses, and thriving downtown while accommodating a high housing mandate and evolving traffic and safety needs.
The following four candidates ran for Town Council. Click on their names to learn more about them.
- Newell Arnerich is a seven-term councilmember who has been on the Danville Town Council since 1995. He is an architect who has lived in Danville for almost 38 years, and has served on numerous local, regional, and statewide boards. Arnerich cited crime and fulfilling the housing mandate as the town’s top concerns.
- Mark Belotz is member of the Danville Design Review Board, the Danville Heritage Resource Commission, and the Danville Historic Design Review Committee, and volunteers with numerous local preservation organizations. He feels the state's mandate to build 2241 new units of housing is Danville's biggest current challenge.
- Julia Gillette is a real estate broker who has worked for the California Department of Real Estate, the Environmental Protection Agency, and San Joaquin County Public Works. She has volunteered for fundraising efforts to keep music education in local schools. Gillette listed traffic congestion and complying with Housing element demands as some of Danville's top challenges.
- Renee Morgan has served on the Danville Town Council since 2012. Before that, she also served on the Danville Planning Commission, Heritage Resource Commission, and on the Historic Design Review Board, and continues to serve on a number of regional boards and committees. Morgan cited maintaining Danville’s fiscal health, preserving public safety, and managing Housing Element requirements as some of the town’s top challenges.

The race between incumbent Shelley Clark and challenger Karen Shumway centers on funding, enrollment, attracting and retaining good teachers, test scores, and curriculum.

She has also served on a number of boards and committees, including as the school board’s liaison to the Town of Danville, the Parcel Tax Oversight Committee, and the Facilities Master Plan Committee.
