Several Coyote Sightings Reported To Danville Police

Danville police said they have received many reports of sightings, and offered tips for how to keep coyotes at bay.

DANVILLE, CA — Danville police have been notified of recent coyote sightings, the Danville Police Department said in a social media post.

Coyotes tend to be wary of human interaction, but may pose risks to humans and pets if they have access to food or garbage, the department said. In the case of an attack, call 911 or notify the regional Department of Fish and Wildlife Bay Delta Regional Office at 707-428-2022.

Residents are advised to help mitigate coyote-related issues in a number of ways:

  • Ensure all garbage containers are securely closed or locked.
  • Avoid leaving pet food or water outdoors.
  • Never feed coyotes.
  • Make sure pets are inside or supervised when outside.
  • Collect fallen fruit from trees and cover compost piles.
  • Reinforce perimeter fences.
  • Trim shrubs that can serve as hiding spots.
  • Install motion-activated sprinklers.

Up to 750,000 coyotes live throughout California, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
