40MPH Expected Winds, Wildfire Danger Prompt NWS Watch
Just one day after measurable snow fell in the mountains, the weather service is issuing a watch because of wildfire conditions.
DUBLIN, CA — The National Weather Service has issued a weekend Fire Weather Watch across much of Northern California due to gusty winds and dry conditions.
“We have issued a Fire Weather Watch beginning 5 AM Saturday through 5 PM Sunday for gusty offshore winds and dry conditions,” the National Weather Service Bay Area said in a Thursday morning tweet. “Please stay up to date on the forecast, and use extreme caution when recreating outdoors. Keep up with local officials for further information.”
The warning extends to terrains above 1,000 feet in Sonoma, Napa, and Marin counties, as well as the Santa Cruz Mountains, eastern Santa Clara County, the southern Peninsula, and the East Bay Hills, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning is not a Red Flag Warning, which represents the highest level of alert for potential fires. A Fire Weather Watch is issued up to 72 hours before fire conditions are expected to occur. Ironically, the watch comes just one day after measurable snowfall in the Sierras.

Temperatures are expected to be fairly moderate throughout the weekend, with highs in the low 70s throughout the region. The watch was issued due to winds that are expected to gust up to 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Ridgetops and peaks may see gusts of up to 50 mph. Relative humidity of 15 to 25 percent on Saturday and Sunday combined with high winds can cause fires to spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Residents are advised to review their Wildfire Evacuation Checklist; clean leaves from roofs, gutters and around the base of walls; ensure that a Go Kit is on-hand; ensure that cars have a full tank of gas or charge; and make sure cell phones are charged. See here for more tips.
