After nearly two decades, Draeger's Market announces the store is closing, citing "industry challenges," and a sale on store items.
DANVILLE, CA — After nearly two decades, Draeger's Market announced the store in the Blackhawk Plaza will be closing.
The owners announced their decision in a letter dated Wednesday that was sent to residents in the area.
"After 19 years of service, Draeger's has made the difficult decision to close our Blackhawk store near mid-February," according to the letter.

The store was a local favorite. But the family cited challenges to the industry in recent years.

"The retail industry has faced many challenges over the past few years, and our business must repond to economic factors accordingly."
The letter announced a closing sale beginning today.
Draeger’s started as a local grocery chain founded by Gustave Draeger in San Francisco in 1925 as “Draeger’s Delicatessen." The family moved operations further afield, opening four stores — Los. Altos, Menlo Park, San Mateo, and Blackhawk — catering to "discerning home cooks, experienced chefs and everyday people come together to celebrate food, family and life," according to the company website.
The stores in Menlo Park and Los Altos will remain open, according to the letter.
In January 2025, the family closed their San Ramon location after 30 years to make way for a new mixed-use development, according to reports.
"We are sincerely grateful to our Blackhawk customers for their loyalty over the years," according to the letter, mirroring the San Mateo closing announcement. "Our priority during this transition is to provide support to our employees, offering opportunities within other locations where possible."
Employees reached by phone confirmed the closing.
