Dublin CHP Officer Helps Nab Suspect Who Caused I-580 Closure

EAST BAY, CA — The shutdown of Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland for more than four hours Tuesday was due to police activity, and a California Highway Patrol officer from the Dublin office helped corral the suspect.

Westbound Interstate Highway 580 was reopened at 3 p.m. after Tuesday's morning pursuit involving multiple law enforcement units, California Highway Patrol announced. The CHP first reported a closure at the junction with state Highway 24 in Oakland at 10:30 a.m., before all westbound lanes were closed.

A CHP officer assigned to the Dublin office saw a silver Chevrolet matching the descriptions from a previous lookout alert moving erratically through traffic on westbound Highway 580. The driver of the suspect vehicle attempted to evade the officer and the pursuit ensued into CHP Castro Valley Area's jurisdiction, where two officers from the Castro Valley unit entered the pursuit.

CHP officials said the pursuit ended in Oakland after the suspect vehicle got stuck between a transit bus and a concrete wall in an attempt to overtake the bus.

A CHP officer shot at the suspect when the suspect began ramming the occupied patrol car and the occupied bus in another attempt to evade law enforcement, but did not strike the suspect.
