DUBLIN, CA — Dublin native Bethany Zummo is headed for her third Paralympic games this summer, where she will compete for her third gold medal in sitting volleyball.

Zummo, 31, was born with proximal femoral focal deficiency and fibular hemimelia, a condition that led to a leg amputation when she was two years old.

Still, she knew she loved sports, and didn’t let that stop her. At Dublin High School, she played sitting volleyball, and continued playing at the University of Central Oklahoma. As a senior, she made it onto Team USA, where she has played for 14 years. She won a gold medal at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, and at the 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo.

When she’s not winning gold medals, she coaches at the NorCal Volleyball Club in Livermore. In May, she was entered into the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame.

“I am filled with gratitude about the life that I get to live. It's really wild when I get to think about it,” she told KCRA.
