DUBLIN, CA — Dublin High School student Ananya Akkaraju won the National Kindness Competition thanks to her nonprofit EmpowerHer Education, which has supported the education and health of over 50,000 girls across the globe.

EmpowerHer has over 40 chapters in the United States, as well as countries like Kazkhstan, Ghana and Italy. In addition to their education initiatives, they are launching a project called the HerFuture Collective, which builds hygiene and educational kits for young girls in underserved schools and communities in the Bay Area. EmpowerHer has received grants of over $1000 from Hershey's and Cornell University's Contribution Project for their efforts.

“The struggle for women’s education is deeply embedded in other barriers, such as inaccessibility to hygiene,” Akkaraju said in a statement. “But hopefully through supporting the basic necessities of young girls with the HerFuture Collective, we’re able to address inaccessibility to hygiene and begin working on finding ways to support their education as the next step.”
