IKEA Abandons Plans For Dublin Store
The world's most popular retailer told the city it intends to sell its 28-acre property in east Dublin as it shifts to new projects.

DUBLIN, CA — IKEA informed the city of Dublin that it intends to sell its 28-acre parcel in the eastern part of the city as it shifts its focus toward developing smaller-format stores.
In 2018, the Dublin City Council approved plans for a proposed 317,000-square-foot IKEA store that would include a 93,000-square-foot commercial center intended for additional retailers. Although the project received the necessary entitlements, construction has stalled, and approval has lapsed. The site has remained undeveloped.
IKEA reportedly told the city it plans to develop smaller stores by repurposing vacant retail spaces, a new strategy designed to enhance convenience, reduce delivery costs for customers, and meet the company’s sustainability goals.

Still, the company said it hopes to establish some sort of presence in the region. “The City of Dublin has been a great partner throughout this process, and IKEA remains committed to future growth in the Bay Area, especially in the Tri-Valley,” the company shared with city leadership.
Swedish retailer IKEA has been the world’s largest furniture retailer since 2008. The chain maintains Bay Area locations in downtown San Francisco, East Palo Alto, and Emeryville.
