4.0 Earthquake Rattles L.A.

The tremor hit at 10:14 p.m. Tuesday, centered near one of the Channel Islands.

A 4.0 earthquake centered in the Pacific Ocean about 30 miles southwest of Malibu surprised some near Downtown Los Angeles Tuesday night.

With an epicenter 53 miles from the Civic Center, the moderate quake got locals talking on Facebook and Twitter.

One near the La Mill coffeehouse on Silver Lake Boulevard tweeted that she felt the shaking, although she admitted she first dismissed it as her dog underfoot.

The quake was also felt in Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, Malibu and Oxnard.
