College-Bound Immigrants Get Help from Chinatown Library Friends
The scholarships are a rare source of support for graduating students at Echo Park's Evans Adult School.

Eight students at Evans Community Adult School in Echo Park are the proud recipients of the Friends of the Chinatown Library scholarship.
The winners are Inocente David Arias, Julio Choto, Ruben Dennis, Jorge F. Garcia, Maria Gonzalez, Jorge Lopez, Yasmin Sandoval and Jacqueline Urrutia.

Four of the recipients hail from El Salvador, three are from Mexico and one is from Guatemala.
The awards of $1,500 each will help recipients continue their educations at schools including Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Trade Tech and Pasadena City College.

Career pursuits include dental hygeine, auto mechanics, psychotherapy, graphic design, business, occupational therapy, nursing and heating ventilation and air conditioning.
The Evans Adult School is a focal point for new immigrants hoping to learn skills that will let them thrive in the American economy. Adult school programs like Evans are often threated with closure or reductions, as they were in LAUSD's most recent budget battles.
Evans Adult School is located on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park near Downtown Los Angeles.
The Friends of the Chinatown Library have several scholarship programs, including one for college-bound seniors and another for college students who want to study library science.
