Man Roughs Up Woman in Griffith Park, Tries to Steal Backpack

It was unclear if the suspect matched the description of man wanted for trying to sexually assault a woman off Mount Hollywood Drive near the observatory a week ago today.

Los Angeles police sought a man who roughed up a woman in Griffith Park during an attempt to steal her backpack today.

The crime occurred about 6:40 a.m. just inside the park entrance at Fern Dell Drive and Los Feliz Boulevard, Los Angeles police spokeswoman Officer Wendy Reyes said.

"The woman was injured during the assault and was transported to a hospital in stable condition," she said. "The only description we have so far of the man is a male Hispanic, no age, weight or height."

Reyes didn't know if the thief got away with the woman's backpack or what the woman was doing in the park at that time of the morning.

He was described as a 30-something Hispanic man, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a light complexion, short brown hair and a mustache.
