School District Bans Terms That Demean Indigenous Mexicans

Oxnard has outlawed the use of "Oaxaquita" and "inditos" in its school district, claiming it reproduces racist attitudes that exist in Mexico. Should LAUSD follow?

The Los Angeles Times reports that Oxnard is trying to ban the use of "Oaxaquita" and "inditos" in its school district.

Mexicans have traditionally used the terms to disparage indigenous peoples--particularly Oaxacans.

The use of the term in schools, some argue, reproduces racism and discrimination and is a form of bullying.
