About me: I'm grateful for the opportunity to report community news in the San Francisco Bay Area as a Field Editor at Patch. I grew up in New York City and have called California my home since riding my bike cross country when I was 19. I got my start in journalism as sports editor of City College of San Francisco’s student newspaper. Through good fortune I was able to use that experience to launch my career as a freelance sports journalist at the San Mateo Times while completing my degree in history at San Francisco State University. Many Bay Area Patch readers will likely recognize my byline; I spent parts of five years from 2010 to 2014 as a writer and editor for multiple Patch sites in the North Bay and on the Peninsula. My first staff writing position was at the Los Angeles Daily News, where I started out covering minor league baseball and community sports before transitioning to the public safety beat in the Antelope Valley (northern Los Angeles County/southern Kern County). I've written for The Associated Press, USA Today, The Boston Herald, The Philadelphia Daily News, The San Francisco Examiner, The Orange County Register, The Dallas Morning News and on ESPN.com, among other publications. If you have a story idea, feedback on how I’m doing or how I can better serve your community please email me: gideon.rubin@patch.com
