Elk Grove High Fire Was Arson, Officials Say

The fire created about $50,000 in damage, authorities say.

The fire that destroyed football equipment and other supplies at Elk Grove High School Thursday morning was arson, officials say.

The Cosumnes Fire Department said the blaze, which was first reported around 2:45 a.m., destroyed two storage sheds and lightly damaged a third.

The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes, the Cosumnes Fire Department said in a press release.

Elk Grove Unified School District spokeswoman Liz Graswich said the fire destroyed a football practice sled, a small tractor and other supplies–a total loss of about $50,000.

The Cosumnes Fire Department acknowledged rumors are already flying around the cause of the fire, but declined to respond to them.

β€œI am aware of conversations taking place on various social media platformsΒ regarding this fire and theories regarding potential suspects,” the press release quotedΒ Deputy Fire ChiefΒ JohnΒ Michelini as saying. β€œWe are conducting our investigation and willΒ not be responding to, or providing comment on any social media rumorsΒ related to this incident.”
