Training Fires to be Held in Elk Grove This Week and Next

Cosumnes Fire officials could have their hands full fighting fires in the Laguna area this week and next, but they've been set on purpose.

The department is setting a series of wildlife training burns near Laguna Station Road and the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The burns will be held from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on June 17, 18, 20, 21, 24 and 28, weather permitting.

More details from the department follow:

Elk Grove, CA. – Did you see the smoke in the Laguna area of Elk Grove today?Β The Cosumnes Fire Department has partnered with the Sacramento RegionalΒ Wastewater Treatment Plant to perform a series of wildland training burns offΒ Laguna Station Road. These burns will be conducted between 7:00 am and 1:30Β pm on June 17th, 18th, 20th, 21st, 24th and 28th this year (weather permitting). ThisΒ training offers a valuable opportunity for firefighters to hone their wildlandΒ firefighting skills, as well as assist the Water Treatment Plant in reducing the dryΒ grass hazard on the treatment facility grounds.Β

The conditions this early in the fire season are very concerning for firefighters.Β The dry weather this winter has lead to predictions of a potentially very dangerousΒ fire season across the State. Fires occurring now are behaving as they would inΒ the late summer or early fall when fire fuels are typically at their driest. PropertyΒ owners are reminded to minimize hazards on their property, maintain a defensibleΒ space, and avoid mowing or weed eating dry grass in the afternoon. One sparkΒ from hitting rocks or other debris in the grass can lead to a destructive fire.
