Child Pinned Under Truck Following Suspected DUI Crash In Encinitas

A man is facing DUI charges after the truck he was driving was involved in a two-vehicle collision that left a boy injured.

ENCINITAS, CA — A child was pinned under a truck following a suspected DUI crash Wednesday evening in northern San Diego County.

Deputies responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of South Coast Highway 101 and West D Street in Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

A preliminary investigation indicated a 2026 Chevy Silverado, driven by Edward De La Torre, 64, was traveling northbound on South Coast Highway 101 near West D Street when the truck collided into the back of a 2022 Toyota Prius, according to the sheriff's office. The truck then veered off the roadway and struck the Gelato 101 Building at 480 S. Coast Highway 101.

A boy who was inside the building was struck and trapped beneath the truck, sheriff's officials said. First responders were able to free the child, who was conscious and breathing at the scene. He was taken to Rady Children's Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

De La Torre was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The occupants of the car were evaluated by paramedics and did not appear to be injured.
