Hurricane Kay​ Could Bring Showers, Thunderstorms, Winds To Encinitas

The hurricane will not directly hit San Diego County, but could bring gusty winds, heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms to the region.

ENCINITAS, CA — Although scorching temperatures continue to impact California, weather officials said a hurricane off the coast of Mexico will help end the record-breaking heat wave by the weekend in San Diego County.

Weakening Hurricane Kay will not directly hit the county, but could bring gusty winds, heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms to the region this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Hazardous boating conditions are also expected in coastal waters around San Diego.

"There will be strong gusty east winds for Friday morning through evening with increasing showers and isolated thunderstorms for Friday and Friday night into Saturday," forecasters said.

A high wind watch will be in effect from Friday morning through evening for the county's coastal areas, mountains and valleys, including the city of Encinitas.

Strong easterly winds are expected from 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph in the coastal areas, and from 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 80 mph in the valleys, according to the National Weather Service. Winds are expected from 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 75 mph in the mountains.

"Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines," forecasters said. "Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles."
