Crime Log: Woman Robbed of Purse at Gunpoint; Man Beaten and Robbed of Wallet

A summary of recent crimes reported in Fremont.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Fremont between Feb. 7 and Feb. 13 as released by the Fremont Police Department. 

THURSDAY, FEB. 7

Suspicious package at Fremont Police Station brings out bomb squad

A suspicious package was found in the Fremont Police Department's mailroom. Due to multiple factors such as weight, bulk and the fact that there was no return address, police decided to evacuate the building and call the Alameda County Bomb Squad. In the end, the package was deemed harmless.

Attempted home burglary

A woman who was sleeping alone in her home on the 43300 block of Paseo Padre Parkway heard noises coming from the downstairs area of her home at around 7 p.m. She called out for her husband, but didn’t get a response. She called her husband’s phone, who said he was on the road miles away. She hung up, locker herself in her room and called 911. Arriving officers found that suspects had tried to force their way into the house through the front door and then went around back and broke the rear sliding door.

FRIDAY, FEB. 8

Suspicious person seen hopping fences on Chapman Way

A man was spotted hopping over a fence into a backyard on Chapman Way. Officers responded and set up a perimeter but were unable to locate the suspect.

Squatter arrested for resisting arrest, drug charges

Officers were sent to the Estates at Park Place Apartments on a report of a suspicious man believed to be squatting in a unit. An officer located the man in the center of the complex, who fled into an apartment unit and locked the door. Officers smelled something burning from inside the unit but the suspect would not open the door. Officers had to force their way in and found the man hiding in a bedroom closet. The man refused to exit the closet but eventually came out when officers brought in a police dog. Investigators learned that the man had been given a three-day eviction notice. Meth was also found in plain view. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and possessing a controlled substance.

Drunken women destroys cash registers at McDonald’s, assaults man walking dog

A woman had to be placed in a wrap and arrested after reportedly entering a McDonald’s on Cushing Parkway and destroying multiple cash registers and computers. The woman, who was found to be intoxicated, also assaulted and battered a man who was walking his dog in the area. She was eventually located, put in a wrap and arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism.

Woman robbed for purse at gunpoint

A woman who was sitting in her car on Nylander Terrace was robbed at gunpoint. A male suspect pointed a handgun at her, told her not to scream and then stole her purse. The victim was unable to provide a detailed description of the suspect.

SATURDAY, FEB. 9

Identity thief may have impersonated 60 people across U.S.

A 29-year-old Fremont man was arrested after an officer serving a warrant located evidence of identity theft of at least 60 victims from throughout the U.S. The officer also found evidence possibly linked to an out-of-town burglary as well as property taken from an out-of-town robbery.

Teen robbed outside of middle school by men with meat cleaver

A teenage victim was approached by two men in front of Thornton Junior High School. One of the men was armed with a meat cleaver. They made the victim empty his pockets and stole his cell phone.

SUNDAY, FEB. 10

Man arrested after stealing TVs from Walmart

A 42-year-old Newark man loaded up two flat screen TVs at the Walmart on Osgood Road and exited the store without paying. Store security wrote down the license plate of the vehicle. An officer detained the suspect when he arrived home. The TVs were recovered and the man confessed to the crime and was arrested.

Stolen vehicles

A 1997 Honda Civic was stolen from the Carrington Apartments parking lot at 4875 Mowry Ave. sometime between 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 9 and noon on Feb. 10.
 
A 1991 red Honda Civic was stolen from the 37600 block of Farwell Drive. The vehicle was taken sometime during the night.

A 1993 Honda DelSol was taken from the 4800 block of Mowry Avenue sometime between 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 8 and 4 p.m. Feb. 10.

MONDAY, FEB. 11

Woman attacked with hammer

A woman was attacked in the driveway of her home on Greenhilss Way by two men. One of the men was armed with a hammer or rubber mallet and hit her multiple times in the face with it. The other suspect punched her in the back of the head before fleeing the scene.

Man beaten and robbed of wallet

A man was found beaten and lying on the sidewalk of the bridge over the Alameda Creek near Paseo Padre Parkway and Decoto Road. Arriving officers located the victim, who was suffering from facial injuries. The victim said that he was assaulted and robbed of his wallet.

Armed robbery at Qwik Stop

A suspect held up a clerk at the Qwik Stop on Farwell Drive and Mowry Avenue. He pointed a handgun at the clerk and made off with cash.

TUESDAY, FEB. 12

Woman robbed of cell phone at bus stop

A man snatched a woman’s cell phone as she waited at a bus stop near Hope Station Tuesday. Police responded to the area at noon and found the victim inside of the thrift store, located 37482 Fremont Blvd. The victim was looking down and texting on her phone when a man came up to her, put his hand over her mouth, grabbed her white iPhone and ran.

Five arrested after stealing $460 worth of toiletries

Five Oakland residents were arrested after stealing $460 worth of toiletries and hygiene products from the Fremont Hub Safeway Tuesday evening. Fremont police received a call at 5:40 p.m. from a witness saying that three women had run into the store with bags and ran out into a waiting car shortly after. Officers eventually caught up with the vehicle and conducted a lengthy, high-risk stop as the suspects were uncooperative. After removing the suspects from the car, officers located a total of three plastic bags and three purses stuffed with shampoo, medicine, lotion and other personal care products in the trunk and inside of the car.

Residential burglaries

A home on the 38400 block of Fitzgerald Circle was broken into between 12:40 and 2:40 p.m.  In that time, unknown suspects entered through a bathroom and made off with jewelry. The victim reported that on the previous day, a teenager knocked on the door and asked for someone named Peter. When the victim said there was no Peter at the residence, the teenager walked away. A neighbor in the area also reported that they heard someone was on their roof on Feb. 11 at about 7 p.m.

Jewelry was taken from a home on the 4000 block of Stevenson Boulevard between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. There were no signs of forced entry.

A home on the 400 block of Maar Avenue was burglarized between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Unknown suspects entered through an unlocked door and stole jewelry and coins. Neighbors reported seeing a later 1970s or 1980s school bus or yellow van in the area with just the driver inside. A black BMW was also spotted in the area on Feb. 11. The man exited the vehicle, pulled his hoodie over his face and walked around the neighborhood before meeting up with someone who pulled up in an older “beat up” car. Another neighbor said a silver pickup was parked “oddly” on the west side of the victim’s home between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. but no description of the occupants was given.

A home was also burglarized on the 38700 block of Chimera Circle between 8:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. Unknown suspects entered the backyard through an unlocked gate and forced open a kitchen window. They made off with laptops, a digital camera and jewelry.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 13

Drunk man arrested after walking in traffic

Police were sent to check on the welfare of a man who was spotted riding his back in traffic in the area of Fremont Boulevard and Mowry Avenue at around 2:25 a.m. When officers arrived, the man was walking on the edge of the middle lane on Mowry Avenue, causing a traffic hazard. The 35-year-old man was uncooperative and belligerent. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public. 

Man found severely injured at Fremont BART station

A 52-year-old man was found severely injured at the Fremont BART station early Wednesday morning. A BART employee found the victim suffering from major, life-threatening head trauma at 3:20 a.m. outside of the paid area on the west side of the station. The victim, whose last known residence is Hayward, was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to a trauma center.

Residential burglary

A home on the 4300 block of Cassio Court was burglarized between 6:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. The suspects smashed the rear patio door and stole jewelry and shoes.
