Fremont Community Market To Host Pet Costume Contest, Lowrider Event This Weekend

FREMONT, CA — Have a furry pal that looks great in a mask and cape? A lowrider that puts all others to shame? Or maybe it's time to buy some new household items following this year's spring cleaning.

Whichever applies, the Ohlone College Flea & Community Market's "Bark In The Barrio" event in Fremont this weekend seems to have something in store for everyone.

Every October, the Ohlone Multicultural Student Center partners with market organizers to celebrate Latinx Heritage and Filipino American History Months, Marissa Romano, the site supervisor of Ohlone Flea and Community College, told Patch.

The free event will have a pet costume and lowrider costumes, free crafts for children to take part in, a bouncy house, musical performances and dozens of vendors, according to its organizers, the Ohlone College Flea Market and Multicultural Student Center.. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pets will take center stage at 11 a.m. for the costume contest.

"Being close to Halloween, we include our pet friends in the fun festivities," Romano said.

Car enthusiasts looking to participate in the lowrider contest must register their vehicle before the event and check in at Lot G between 8 and 10 a.m. the day of. The show categories include Best Exterior, Best in Show and Best Classic.

The Ohlone College Flea and Community Market started in 1986, but went through a lengthy hiatus in 2014 due to campus renovations, Romano said.

It returned in 2023 and now takes place second Saturday of the Month. Each event draws an average of 100 small businesses and vendors and thousands of attendees, Romano said.

Romano said the market is "more than just a flea and community market — it's a community gathering spot."
