Fremont PD Awarded Nearly $2.5M To Help Combat Retail Theft

Grant awards could help mitigate the recent rise in crime experienced by retailers not just in Fremont, but statewide, BSCC officials said.

FREMONT, CA — Efforts to obtain funding to help in the effort to combat retail theft by Fremont Police Department has paid off in a big way, the department announced in a recent news release.

According to that release, Fremont police received notice from the Board of State and Community Corrections Sept. 14, informing the department that it would be receiving $2,453,958 in the form of a Organized Retail Theft Prevention Grant it had applied for in July.

According to the department, the grant will be used to "support ongoing efforts to respond to and mitigate the impact of criminal activity" within the community.

"These funds will enable FPD to enhance public safety with the purchase of technology and additional full-time crime analyst positions," the news release said.

The Fremont City Council is expected to accept the funding, the funding, which is part of the Governor Gavin Newsom’s Real Public Safety Plan, at a future Council meeting.
