Hatchet Attack At Bay Area Restaurant: Police

Police tracked down the suspect and arrested him.

FREMONT, CA — A man with a criminal background was arrested by Fremont Police for attacking a restaurant worker with a hatchet, police reported Wednesday.

The victim suffered a minor injury to their arm.

The attack happened last Friday near Mission and Warm Springs boulevards.

Police received a call during the noon hour reporting that a man armed with a hatchet was inside the restaurant and yelling. "As officers were responding, the reporting party provided updated information, which included the male subject had just struck an employee with the hatchet."

Police say the man then stole food and ran away from the restaurant.

Officers found the suspect, Evin Sagastume, 35, a short distance from the restaurant.

The hatchet was recovered nearby.

According to police, Sagastume was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail. His previous arrests include assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a weapon.

"He is currently charged with Penal Code 211- Robbery, Penal Code 245(a)(1) – Assault with a deadly weapon, and Penal Code 422(a)- Criminal threats," police said.
