Identity Thief May Have Impersonated 60 People Across U.S.

Identity theft may be the subject of a new comedy, but a 29-year-old Fremont man will soon learn that it is no laughing matter.

According to the Fremont Argus, Antoine Wells was busted Monday with personal checks and information that belongs to more than 60 people from throughout the region and country.

Wells was arrested at the Fremont Boulevard Motel 6 on suspicion of various charges including identity theft, receiving known stolen property and appropriating lost property, among other charges, the Argus reports.

Fremont police initially went to Wells’ room at the motel to serve him an outstanding warrant from Sacramento for being a felon in possession of a firearm and for failing to appear in court, according to the Argus.

When they searched the room, they found evidence of identity theft of at least 60 people. Victims stretched from Hayward and San Leandro to New York and Florida, Fremont police told the Argus.

Police also found evidence that may be linked to a burglary that occurred out of town.
