Man Arrested After Stabbing Pitbull With BBQ Fork

A family dispute fueled by alcohol spiraled out of control early this morning at a Fremont home when one family member started attacking the family pet pit bull, a spokeswoman said.

When police arrived on the 3500 block of Ruskin Avenue around 3:25 a.m. to a report of a disturbance, they found a woman who said she had been stabbed, but later said a dog had bit her, Bosques said.

After interviewing other family members, police determined many of the residents had been drinking, including a 22-year-old man that police eventually arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, Bosques said.

Family members told police the 22-year-old Fremont resident was provoking the family's pit bull and had started punching the dog. The family said they asked him to stop hitting the dog, which then snapped, prompting him to threaten to kill the dog, according to police.

He went to look for a knife but only found a barbecue fork and started stabbing the dog with it. The man then tried to bring the dog outside, when the dog bit the man on the hand, face and leg, Bosques said.

The woman police had initially encountered at the home also suffered cuts consistent with bite marks, Bosques said. Police inspected the dog, which was not injured in the fight. No weapons were found at the home, Bosques said.

The suspect was treated for his minor injuries and then booked at Santa Rita Jail, Bosques said.
