📰 News we're reading

1. Pedestrian Killed After Driver Runs Red Light In Fremont: Police (patch.com) — A pedestrian was killed in Fremont after a speeding driver allegedly ran a red light on Osgood Road, lost control, and jumped the curb, according to police. Officers say they had earlier tried to stop the car but ended the attempt for safety reasons before later finding the crash scene near South Grimmer Boulevard. Fremont police are seeking witnesses as they investigate, including whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

2. Botched Grow House Burglary Leads To Wild Chase, 3 Crashes And 10 Arrests (patch.com) — A late-night burglary at a Salinas cannabis grow house led to a chaotic pursuit, multiple crashes, and ten arrests involving suspects from San Francisco and the East Bay. Among those booked into Monterey County Jail was a 30-year-old Fremont resident, facing burglary, conspiracy, firearm, and stolen property charges. Authorities are still seeking information from the public about the incident.

3. Fresno's potential new ordinances could mean jail time for violations like public camping (kmph.com) — Fremont’s approach to enforcing anti-encampment rules is being closely watched as Fresno considers similar ordinances that could bring fines or jail time for public camping and related violations. Fremont officials say their law, adopted earlier this year, hasn’t required heavy enforcement because most people comply when asked to move, offering a contrast to Palm Springs’ more intensive use of its ordinance.

4. Afghan couple reflects on impact of Trump's travel ban as anti-immigrant rhetoric intensifies (eastbaytimes.com) — Afghan spouses building their life in Fremont’s Little Kabul describe how Trump-era travel bans and anti-immigrant rhetoric shape their daily choices, including fears about visiting family abroad. They share how local mosques, markets, and coffee shops help them feel at home while they navigate immigration uncertainty and pursue work and education in the Bay Area.
