Man Killed In Fremont Police Shooting After Firing At Cop's Car

Fremont Police said three of its officers were involved in the shooting.

FREMONT, CA — A man accused of opening fire and striking a Fremont police vehicle was killed in an officer-involved shooting Thurday night, police said.

The shooting occurred around 10:49 p.m. on Civic Center Drive south of Mowry Avenue. Fremont police said three of its officers were involved in the shooting.

Fremont police said an officer was going south on Civic Drive on his way to the police station. The officer was uniformed and in a fully-marked patrol car.

When the officer drove past the intersection of the Washington West and Washington Hospital ER driveways, a man emerged on foot and pointed a gun at the officer, police said. The suspect fired at the officer's car, striking it at least once on the driver's side, according to police.

The officer made a u-turn and fired at the suspect with his rifle, according to police. The suspect went to the ground and two more police officers driving in the area heard radio traffic of shots fired and responded to the area, according to police.

The officers positioned their patrol vehicle and could see the suspect lying on the ground and waving his arms, police said. Officers could also see a gun on the ground.

Cops ordered the suspect to raise his hands and to not reach for the gun but he ignored commands, "raised up off the ground, crawled towards the gun, picked it up and pointed it at the officers," police said.

The officers returned fire and struck the suspect. According to police, the suspect fell back to the ground and a handgun was recovered from beneath his torso.

Police said the incident began at 10:50 a.m. and the man was pronounced dead 17 minutes later.

No police officers or bystanders were injured.

The investigation is ongoing and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has been notified to conduct a parallel investigation. The coroner's office will identify the suspect and determine the cause of death.
