Bicyclist Killed in Fatal Collision with Car

A 57-year-old bicyclist was killed after colliding with a car early Monday morning. The fatal accident occurred at about 7:05 a.m. in the area of Paseo Padre Parkway and Tamayo Street near Isherwood Way. Responding officers found the bicyclist -- identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as David Martinez of Fremont -- lying in the road. Martinez was unresponsive and, after attempts to revive him, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver was cooperative and remained on scene.

Police Confirm BART Shooting Victim Was Fremont Resident Kenneth Seets

BART officials confirmed Wednesday that the man shot and killed at the Bayfair BART station in San Leandro on Saturday afternoon was 50-year-old Fremont resident Kenneth Lee Seets. Family members posted on Patch Monday that Kenneth Lee Seets was fatally shot in the bus-loading zone of the BART station at about 12:20 p.m. A second victim was wounded by gunfire and taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Seets, 50, who may have been killed by gunfire intended for someone else, was described by commenters on Patch as "very loving" and the "last person one would think this could happen to."

Patch dropped by the Mowry East Shopping last week, and it seemed all but deserted. There was some traffic at the Indian grocery store and a few patrons exercised at Planet Fitness, while others entered the City Sports storefront to inquire about the new gym taking form in the plaza. Union City Man Remains in Critical Condition After Crashing Into Tree

A 20-year-old Union City man who drove his car into a tree in Fremont over the weekend is showing signs of improvement but remained in critical condition earlier in the week. The man was driving south on Ardenwood Boulevard in Fremont around 4 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of his car and slammed into a large tree near the intersection of Ardenwood Boulevard and Kaiser Drive. The driver's side door area struck the tree, causing major damage to the vehicle and major injuries for the driver. 

Police Log: Drunken Partygoers Threaten to Kill Cops; Suspect Falls Asleep in Stolen Vehicle

The latest police report from UCPD includes reports of drunken partygoers threatening to kill cops and brandishing a metal pipe, a report of a vehicle thief falling asleep in the stolen car and a report of men pointing pellet guns at motorists, among others. See the full log here.

Logan Wrestlers Featured in Sports Magazine

Youth sports magazine SportStars highlights James Logan High School’s wrestling team in their latest Bay Area edition, labeling it “the NCS’s most storied wrestling program.” Released last week, the magazine spotlights four of Logan’s top grapplers — Logan juniors Jacob Donato, Clayton Hartwell and Jacob Macalolooy and senior Artemio Flores — in a feature story about the high school’s return to dominance in the wrestling arena. The magazine also names Macalolooy and Hartwell among their “Top 10 Bay Area Wrestlers to Watch,” with Flores earning a nod for being on the radar. See more here.

Justice Afoa Case: Sister Recalls Months Before Teen Was Killed

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Thomas Reardon will soon decide whether there is enough evidence to try two men and a woman in the stabbing of 17-year-old Justice Afoa, who bled to death on a Newark sidewalk ten days before Christmas in 2010. 

During a preliminary examination earlier this week, Justice’s sister, Dinah Afoa, spoke on behalf of the family, describing Justice as “a jokester.” “He was always smiling and laughing,” she recalled. But in the months prior to his death, Justice became embroiled in a contest of fists and wills that ended in death and accusations. After being a victim of an attempted stabbing in which his friend was attacked, Justice’s family worried for his safety. He was supposed to stay with an aunt in Modesto, but that never happened.

Drugged Man Attempts to Uproot Trees From Stranger's Yard

A man who said he needed to uproot trees in front of a Cherry Street home to rescue children was arrested early Tuesday morning. Police said officers were called to the 36200 block of Cherry Street after a woman called and said the man was pulling trees from her front yard just after 12:30 a.m. The man then tried to open the front door of the home, the witness told officers.  Arriving officers said the 42-year-old man "was obviously delusional and believed he was rescuing his children from the potted trees he was trying to pull up, according to a statement from Newark police. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of meth.

Rasputin Opening at NewPark Mall Delayed

Music lovers will have to wait a little longer before they can head out to NewPark Mall for a trip to Rasputin. Rasputin Music, which was slated to open in early December, has yet to open. Mall management noted on NewPark's Facebook page that the anticipated opening date for Rasputin has been pushed to February. A children's play area is also set to open in the near future at NewPark Mall.
