Patch dropped by the Mowry East Shopping last week, and it seemed all but deserted. There was some traffic at the Indian grocery store and a few patrons exercised at Planet Fitness, while others entered the City Sports storefront to inquire about the new gym taking form in the plaza. Will a it give this plaza more pep? Once a thriving locale that was home to Cost Plus (now at Fremont Hub), Aaron Brothers Framing, Market Broiler (now at Pacific Commons) and other stores, it's now a great place to skateboard, play touch football or line up for soccer. Do you shop at Mowry East? Why or why not? What would bring you back?

Justice Afoa Case: Sister Recalls Months Before Teen Was Killed

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Thomas Reardon will soon decide whether there is enough evidence to try two men and a woman in the stabbing of 17-year-old Justice Afoa, who bled to death on a Newark sidewalk ten days before Christmas in 2010.

During a preliminary examination earlier this week, Justice’s sister, Dinah Afoa, spoke on behalf of the family, describing Justice as “a jokester.” “He was always smiling and laughing,” she recalled. But in the months prior to his death, Justice became embroiled in a contest of fists and wills that ended in death and accusations. After being a victim of an attempted stabbing in which his friend was attacked, Justice’s family worried for his safety. He was supposed to stay with an aunt in Modesto, but that never happened.
