GILROY, CA — The COVID-19 mass vaccination site at Gilroy High School closed last week, according to the Gilroy Dispatch.

The site opened in February to help accelerate what was an initially slow vaccine rollout, as cars lined up outside the high school. But as supply increased and a majority of county residents got vaccinated, county officials said there is no longer a need for mass vaccination sites.

Levi’s Stadium, the largest vaccination site in the county, shut down last month. As of Wednesday, over 75 percent of eligible county residents are fully vaccinated. The site at Gilroy High School administered nearly 53,000 doses, according to the Dispatch.

The county is instead focusing on smaller vaccine clinics, targeted at communities that have been hard to reach. Valley Health Center in Gilroy is available for vaccination appointments.

Dr. Rocio Luna, the county’s deputy executive, told the Dispatch that Gilroy High School has been “instrumental” in the county’s vaccination efforts.

“We thank Gilroy High School and the City of Gilroy for their vital assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Luna said.
