Don't Let Luck Run Out: CHP Warns

CHP Gilroy will set up a DUI checkpoint in the unincorporated area of Santa Clara Co. to snag drivers who are impaired.

GILROY, CA -- Hopefully everybody doesn't want to be the irresponsible Irish man or woman this weekend on what is considered amateur hour for those who have indulged too much.

That's the warning coming out of the California Highway Patrol's Hollister-Gilroy office, which will conduct a sobriety/driver license checkpoint on Sunday within an unincorporated area of south Santa Clara County. Mum's the word after that.

CHP officers who are trained in the detection of alcohol and drug impaired drivers will staff the sobriety checkpoint, with the assistance of a CHP Drug Recognition Expert certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to provide assessments of any drivers suspected of drug use.

Officers will have use of preliminary alcohol screening devices to accurately analyze breath samples. Drivers passing through the checkpoint will be checked for impairment and arrested if determined to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The checkpoint will send a clear message to the community that the CHP will not tolerate impaired driving but will promote awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence.

This sobriety checkpoint is made possible through a grant known as Reduce Alcohol Impaired Driving. Funding for this grant is made possible through the California Office of Traffic Safety through the U.S. traffic safety administration.
