Electricity Returns to Gilroy Sister City in Japan
Takko-Machi, Gilroy's sister city, is in the northern part of Honshu, Japan's largest island.

Gilroy's sister city in Japan, Takko-Machi, has regained electricity and some phone service after a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck off the country's northeast coast, according to multiple accounts on Facebook from local residents.
"Thank you all for the well wishes! We've had quite a bit of aftershocks since the big earthquake Friday, but everyone is okay and safe. We appreciate all the love and support from our friends. I will keep everyone updated. Although we are safe, many people in the areas around us are not. Please keep the people of Japan in your prayers," wrote Takko-Machi's Coordinator for International Relations, Jessical Brewka.
With the reported shutdown, information remains difficult to obtain. The city of Gilroy released a map Friday morning showing Takko-Machi's proximity to the earthquake and its aftershocks.
