Eliot Elementary School Honored

The school was part of 209 recognized for serving underprivileged students.

In case you missed it: Gilroy's  was one of 209 schools in California honored for serving "significant numbers of poor children" as part of the 2011 California Distinguished School awards.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that schools who received an award this year would not be taking part in the typical celebration due to state budget cuts.

Ten schools on the Peninsula, in the South Bay and in Santa Cruz have been named 2011 California Distinguished Middle or High Schools. Among them are Chaboya, Dartmouth and Moreland middle schools in San Jose.

But this year they'll be denied the traditional celebration at the Disneyland Hotel. Because Gov. Jerry Brown reduced state travel because of the budget deficit, the May 20 banquet has been canceled.
