A pedestrian walking on Monterey Road early Wednesday morning was struck and killed by a passing vehicle, according to police.

GILROY - A pedestrian walking on Monterey Road early Wednesday morning was struck and killed by a passing vehicle, according to police.
Gilroy police say at 12:18 a.m., officers responded to a report of person down in the roadway on Monterey Road north of Buena Vista Avenue.
When they arrived, they found a 61-year-old man, the apparent victim of a fatal hit and run collision.

Gilroy police say the 20-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck the man initially fled the scene, but returned to report his involvement.
The name of the man killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Santa Clara County coroner's office.

Police say factors leading to the cause of the collision are currently under investigation.
It's not yet known whether alcohol or other intoxicants may have contributed to the collision, according to authorities.
